WHO WERE YOU? 1
(Written in 1996)
I'd met you twenty-five years before
You were like a shining star
So beautiful that you stuck in my mind
Who would have thought
That five hundred miles south
In a line for an audition for Wheel of Fortune
We'd meet again simply because you looked familiar
And that I'd even recognized your name
Now I can't remember it at all
Oh, it's terrible being ill and getting older
There's a pain and an emptiness inside
Since I've racked my brain just to remember your name
And because I may never see you again
When just to look upon you would be such a blessing
But I always seem to walk away
From contact with other souls, feeling so empty and hurt
Like we never even touched at all
Something is missing in my heart every day
Due to fact that we can't seem to bridge the chasm
Oh, it's so terrible growing older and having this sickness
